12/24/2022 0 Comments Roland sound canvas moduleAll I know is that it keeps freezing on me, has an unfriendly interface, and doesn't allow you to update it without buying a Roland thumb drive. Roland needs to do their user research and observe people using it in order to see how this slows the creative process down.Īdmittedly, I only really use it for its midi sound bank, hooking it up to my computer and keyboard so that I can use it with Cakewalk, so I'm not sure how the other features work. What happened with the SD-20 method, having a software program that allowed you to save to the computer and choose your instruments easily with the mouse instead of fishing around with a turn wheel? This does get easier to use after a while, but it doesn't come close to the user interface that it should have. This begs the question.why do I have to update it using a flash drive when it's CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER with via usb?Īnother problem I had with it is the fact that it can only save 3 preset instrument playlists at a time. I read about a patch that's supposed to help with an i5 compatibility problem, and I can't download it to the SD-50 because it won't accept any of my flash drives. Later, when I tried to use it with my computer, the thing kept freezing up. (It should be noted here that the sounds themselves are decent, but that's about the extend of it.) Overall, I really liked the sounds and was very happy with it for a while. I was very excited to receive the package, FINALLY figured out how to get it to work and how to work the thing myself, and that's when the problems started. I wanted to upgrade to something better, and was hoping that the Roland SD-50 would be that answer. I used to use the Edirol SD-20 back in the day as my sound bank. If you are looking for an external sampler or tone generator device that will allow you to work in the digital domain this isn't it. If you are looking for a USB audio interface device there are many to choose from that will give you what you need without the sound generatior in the SD-50. I don't think they have cornered tne market in high quality sampling and tone generation. I suppose Roland is trying to protect it's proprietary samples or tone generation but I don't see much point to that. The result is a degradation of the audio quality of the SD-50 sounds. It essentially means that the SD-50 sounds are first internally converted to analog and then must be returned to the digital domain by your external hardware codec device. This is not ideal for anyone recording in the digital domain. The sound engine will only play through the Analog outputs whether that be the line outs or the headphone jack. This means you can't use any of the 600 + sounds on a direct digital to digital basis. The biggest downside to the SD-50 is that the internal sound engine is turned off (hardwired) when the unit is hooked to a computer via the USB device port. It is fairly simple to use and I like it's ability to store numerous voice selections for quick and easy access The demo songs aren't very exciting and hardly show what the unit is capable of doing. The generous sound banks for the most part are somewhat redundant and not essential other than the more the better advocates. The SD-50 is a handy device with lots of capability even though somewhat limited.
